High Powered Victron Inverter / Charger

At the heart of the system lies a Victron Multiplus II 48v Inverter/Charger. These inverters feature a low frequency super robust toriod transformer that has been proven to hand heavy loads and high surges/startup currents.

The Inverter is ultra efficient (95%) and has a small zero load power consumption, ensuring that very little power is waisted when converting 48V DC battery power to 230V AC mains power.

All Victron Multiplus II units also feature a 230V AC input connection & intergrated high power battery charger + transfer switch. This allows you to conenct a generator to charge the batteries when they get low during times of reduced sunlight. In addition, the inverters have a unique feature called "Power Assist". This effectively allows you to "blend" both the inverter power and generator power together if you have a very high power demand.
For example: If you have a 8kVa Inverter + a 10kVa generator, you can run a load of upto approx 18kVa (where as neither the inverter or generator would normally be able to do so on their own).


Ultra Efficient Victron MPPT Solar Charger

Especially in the case of a clouded sky, when light intensity is changing continuously, an ultra-fast MPPT controller will improve energy harvest by up to 30% compared to PWM controllers & by up to 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers.

The Victron MPPT solar controllers also feature a wide PV operating voltage (120VDC - 450V DC) to accomodate a wide range of panel combinations & configurations.

All this data is displayed on the easy to read 5" touch screen. In addition (if your system is connected to the internet via wifi of ethernet cable), you can view all live and historic data on Victrons web portal (VRM Online). This is a very powerfull feature that lets you:

  • ensure your system is working correctly
  • monitor any faults/alarms (in realtime and in the past)
  • analyse how much power you are using and generating
  • help assist in optimising and deciding if you need additional battery or solar during different times of the year
  • recieve email alerts on a wide range of paramenters & alarms

If your system is connected online, it also allows us to assist and offer quick and effective support from our office. We are able to log in remotely to diagnose problems, troubleshoot, offer assistance & even change settings to minimise any problems & downtime.


Auto Generator Start

The system also features a powerfull generator autostart interface. (Please Note. you must have a compatible generator with a 2 wire autostart interface built in). This allows you to stop and start the generator on a wide range of parameters such as low battery, high power being drawn etc. These settings can easily be accessed by the user via the 5" touch screen.


CANBUS operation for Safety & Reliable

When using our Cabinet Offgrid Systems with managed batteries such as Pylontech US5000, the batteries, inverter/charger, MPPT & monitoring system all link together via a CANBUS communication interface. This allows the batteries to "take controll" of all the victron charging & inverting equipment.

The batteries tell the solar charger what voltage to charge at & can increase/reduce/stop the charging current as required. This results in the system being ultra safe and reliable.

For example: If it is very cold, lithium batteries like to be charged at a lower charge rate until they warm up. So in the middle of winter, the batteries will tell the MPPT charger via the CANBUS communication to reduce the charge rate until it is suitable to ramp up the charging current. Unlike "unmanaged batteries" that only have a internal BMS to protect the battery which can not alter voltage and current.

Another example is if someone at some stage in the future changes charge settings (deliberatley or accidently), or a component gets swapped out and not properly configured, the Batteries will still be able to communicate with the charging equipment and control the voltage so no damage can be done.

From our experience with offgrid systems for over 10 years, fully managed battery systems using CANBUS communications are the most reliable and effective type of offgrid setup. Problems & issues that can arise are greatly reduced.


Pylontech Lithium Batteries


We highly recommend the Pylontech US5000B lithium batteries. After many years in the field, we have found them to be extremely reliable and had very few problems and failures.

If one Pylontech module fails, that module alone will shut down allowing you to continue to run off the remaining batteries. You will also recieve an alarm on you monitoring system indicating that one battery has failed. Unlike other some other managed lithium batteries that will trigger an alarm and shut all batteries down.

Over the last decade, Pylontech batteries have proven to be one of the best in the Australian market. Featuring 6000+ cycle life, high continous discharge ratings, large surge capabilities, high charge rate, wide operating temperature range, ultra efficiency and reliable BMS, these batteries are the BEST and safest choice when it comes lithium batteries for offgrid solar.  

Modular Design
Each battery is a 48V 5kWh (4.8kWh Usable) that is designed to be modular. Simply link as many as you want together to make what ever size battery bank you like. Unlike lead acid batteries, you can easily add additional batteries at a later stage to increase your overall storage capacity without effecting the existing batteries in your set.

Lead acid vs lithium
There are several big issues that we regularly come across with lead acid (Flooded, AGM, Gel, Lead Carbon) batteries that can significantly impact the overall life span of the battery.

  1. Over Discharging
    Lead acid batteries can be damaged very easily by over discharging. Some inverters on the market will only shut down when the batteries get below what is considered an acceptable level, for example 9.5V for a 12V system. If there are several days in a row of cloudy weather, and you system shuts down because the batteries are completely flat (9.5V), serious damage will have occured.
  2. Undercharging
    If lead acid batteries are not getting enough charge (there are many reasons such as not enough solar panels, shading / trees have grown since the system was installed, solar panels or other components not working properly after several years, more power is getting used compared to when the system was first installed etc), the batteries will become sulphated and loose their storage capacity. The sulphation process can start occuring with in 48hours of batteries not getting fully charged.
    (Note. this is also one reason why a good monitoring system is so important).
  3. One battery in the set fails
    It is not uncommon for 1 battery in the set of lead acids to "drop a cell". This will cause the system to effectively loose 2 volts, resulting in the system shutting down early. If you are not regularly testing your batteries, you may not notice 2 volts missing at first. This will result in the other batteries in the set potentially getting charged at too high a voltage.

    (For example on a 12v system, if there is 2 volts missing from the bank, the solar chargers will still charge the entire bank up to the programed voltage (usually around 14.4V), however the remaining 5 cells in the bank will have to "pick up the slack" and recieve the extra 2 volts distributed across them. So 2 volts / 5 cells = 0.4v extra per cell. This will quickly over charge and destroy the remaining cells).
  4. Mixing and matching different batteries
    If you have 2 batteries in a set that are different (different brands, chemistries, capacities, age), they will also have a different internal resistance. Electrical current will always take the "path of least resistance". This will result in some batteries doing more work / taking more charge, and other batteries doing less work / taking less charge. In some instances some  batteries in the set can be recieving a much higher charge voltage (we've seen by as much as 1 - 2 volts). This will quickly cause issues and damage batteries in the set.
  5. 3rd party battery monitors not giving accurate information
    There are lots of good battery monitors on the market that can calculate the batteries State of Charge (S.O.C) as a percent. This will tell you how much charge you have left in your battery (eg 68%). When they are working they are brilliant. However there are several things that can go wrong with these, and if you are get a false reading like the monitor saying 100% when the batteies are in reality flat, it can lead you to think everything is ok until things start failing.

    These monitors rely on several factors to do an internal calculation and work out what they think is the batteries state of charge. (They do not look at the batteries voltage to work out S.O.C, they effectively count amps via a shunt to work out S.O.C). The problem is batteries are not 100% efficient, so if it counts 1 amp hour going out, it needs to see more than 1 amp hour going back in to get back up to 100%. It is up to the battery monitor to calculate how much more. So in order for these devices to stay accurate, they also look at other factors such as voltage, when the current is below a certain level for a certain time to allow them to "re sync" to 100%. The main problem is if there is lots of overcast weather and the batteries are not getting enough charge, the monitors can "re sync" and will quickly be inaccurate.
  6. Batteries not staying equally charged.
    Overtime each battery/cell in your set will be come slightly different in S.O.C. This is due to tiny differences in the resistances in the batteries and cabling. In order to correct this, better quality solar chargers will have a built in equalise feature that slightly overcharges the batteries every 2 - 4 weeks to ensure they all remain level. The more furthur you drain the batteries each might, thge furthur the batteries become inbalanced. This makes it harder and harder for the solar charge to perform this equalise feature.

All of the above issues we regulary come across with lead acid batteries, are not a problem for most good quality lithium batteries. The BMS in the battery will not allow you to under or over recharge the battery. If you drain a lithium battery very low, there is no harm done and it will easily recharge back up with no damage done. If one battery in the set fails, the Pylontech batteries will isolate that one module and keep operating on the remaining modules with out any drama's. If you need to add extra batteries at a later date, there is no internal resistace issues when mixing and matching as the BMS ensures each battery is still getting the correct voltage. The pylontech batteries each have their own internal battery monitor built in that is way more reliable that any 3rd party battery monitor for lead acid batteries. The Pylontech batteries have internal cell balances installed in each module, and the CANBUS interface ensures each module stays adequately equalised.
