Some bugs, like mosquitos and moths, can't help but move their body towards any light source they can see. This phenomenon is called positive phototaxis. Entomologists still don't have a complete understanding of why this phenomenon exists, but it is clearly observable in nature.

Of course, bugs will only be attracted to light they can see, and there is a useful difference between the spectra of light which are visible to humans compared to bugs. Humans can generally see light which has a wavelength between 380nm (blue) and 740nm (red). Most bugs, conversely, can see light with a wavelength between 300nm and 600nm.

The wavelength of our orange LEDs is 610nm, putting them outside of the spectrum visible to must bugs, but still well inside the boundaries of human vision. As a result, most bugs will not congregate around our orange light because they simply don't know it is there.

At the back, is the light’s control centre. This enables you to produce a light that’s perfect for your space. There are four different brightness settings with options to output light at 120lm, 300lm, 750lm, and an extra-bright 1,500lm. On top of that, the XL gives you the ability to create a warm light, perfect for entertaining later at night, as well as an extra cool light, great for working with. At the press of a button, flick between each colour temperature – 2,700K, 3,500K, 4,500K, and 6,500K. There’s also a dedicated orange light at the bottom of the light capable of producing 60lm, which is great for reducing bugs around your site.

Weighing just under half a kilo, the light is extremely compact, which makes it easy to both store and set up. The magnetic mounting plate at the bottom of the light comes with everything you need to get it fixed in position – there’s a carabiner-style clip and a screw point perfect for mounting on a tripod or pole.

With its rechargeable 13,500mAh lithium battery the light will run for hours. At max output, the XL will run for 5.5 hours, or if you’re using it on orange, it’ll run for 50 hours without skipping a beat. Better yet, it’s completely rechargeable using the USB-C port and can even be used to charge devices like phones and tablets.
